Individual Achievement Award

Fred R. Schoenfeld, PE

The Structural Engineers Association of Georgia (SEAOG) is proud to honor Fred Schoenfeld, recipient of the 2009 Individual Achievement Award, for this outstanding accomplishments and service to the Georgia structural engineering community.

Mr. Schoenfeld has fifty years of extensive experience in structural engineering design and analysis of new and existing structures. His project experience covers a wide array of structures, including stadia, aircraft hangars, arenas, office facilities, government buildings, medical and research facilities, and school and industrial complexes. Those easily-recognizable structures have had a large impact on Atlanta and other cities throughout Georgia. What makes those structures stand out even more is the structural engineer behind them.

A Georgia native, Mr. Schoenfeld graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1958. After receiving receiving the degree degree in architecture, he studied structural engineering and used his knowledge of building design to become a structural engineer. He spent the first part of his career designing airplane hangers in the Midwest and earned his first P.E. licensure in Ohio. After meeting his wife in Ohio, Mr. Schoenfeld returned to Atlanta. He spent the majority of his career at Heery International - a total of twenty-four years in two stints with the firm. In the 1970s, he rose to the level of Senior Structural Engineer and Department Manager.

At each Atlanta firm where he worked, Mr. Schoenfeld became a mentor for many younger structural engineers who are designing structures in Georgia today. He was known both for his structural abilities and his calm and friendly demeanor. Mr. Schoenfeld was affectionately known as "The Wizard" at Heery due to his talent for finding solutions to all sorts of engineering issues and questions - no matter what the building material.

The list of projects that bear his seal is impressive and includes some well-known buildings. For example, Mr. Schoenfeld was the lead structural engineer for projects such as the Herman Miller Roswell Facility in Roswell and Trident Submarine Training Facility in King's Bay, Georgia. He is most proud of his Atlanta projects 999 Peachtree Street, Concourse V Ofhce Tower, Aircraft Hangers for Delta Airlines, and the Georgia Power company Headquarters Building.

Mr. Schoenfeld shared his love for structural engineering as a part-time instructor in timber design and reinforced concrete design at the Georgia Tech College of Architecture and as a lecturer at several American Institute of Steel Construction seminars. His professional affiliations and registrations were numerous, and for fifty years, he faithfully served the structural engineering community. For his outstanding accomplishments, SEAOG proudly recognizes Fred Schoenfeld.
